"Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins

This weekend I read Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and despite the depressing story, I really enjoyed it. I was quite skeptical I would like it, even after hearing from other librarians how good it was, because the story is REALLY depressing.

It follows 16 year-old Katniss and her role in the Hunger Games. The Hunger Games are a sick plot created by the Capital to keep all the Districts in control. Each District must send one boy and one girl to participate in the live, televised Games, where they are instructed to destroy each other until there is only one person left alive, the winner. Katniss becomes part of the Games when her sister's name is drawn at the Reaping and Katniss takes her place.

For much of the novel, Katniss is in pain, literally starving to death, and just trying to stay alive and let the other contestants kill each other off. When it appears she actually has a chance to win the Games, she must use all her skills and cunning to try to come out on top.

The worst part of the book was getting to the end and finding out that it's just part one! I was so mad! The second book, Catching Fire, doesn't come out until September 1, so we've got a while to wait to see what happens to Kat next. I give Hunger Games an 8.5.

My next book is Eternal by Cynthia Leitich Smith - more vampires! Stay tuned.

I was mad too, once I found out it was the first book. This book has a lot of action, and a little easy to foreshadow. Over all it was a good book.
