"Evernight" by Claudia Gray

When I picked up this book this week, I figured I would be in for more of the same “vampires go to boarding school” story. In many ways, I was right. In some ways, I was wrong. If you want to read a Twilight knock-off, here’s your chance.

Evernight follows Bianca, a shy teenager who has been forced by her parents to move to the Evernight Academy. She doesn’t fit in – everyone else seems a little too perfect, a little too predatory. The only time she feels good is when she’s with Lucas, another boy who doesn’t fit in. Then trouble arises and they must flee for their lives.

There were quite a few twists in the story, but the first one was entirely unplausible, coming out of nowhere – there were no clues to this twist, and while Gray may have wanted it that way, it’s very hard as a reader to accept. Other twists were pleasant surprises.

This book paralleled Twilight in so many ways, I was actually bored for most of it. Bianca is mostly focused on her love for Lucas, there are factors keeping them apart, and neither of their families/friends like the relationship. The vampire genre has clearly run out of ideas for now – this book only gets a 6.5 out of 10 from me.
