"Stoneheart" by Charlie Fletcher

I picked this book up because the cover looked really cool, and also because LibraryThing recommended it to me, based on the books I like to read. I have to say, I was quite disappointed. I spent most of this book incredibly frustrated because the author doesn’t really tell you what’s going on and why it’s happening. I also didn’t like Fletcher’s writing style, which is a personal preference, and I also felt like it was entirely too long – at 450 pages, it rivals the Mortal Instruments books for length.

Stoneheart follows George, a 12-year-old boy who lives in London, as he falls into another London, a London where statues move, and most of them hate him and want to kill him, and no one else can see the statues moving. No one except Edie, who plays another part in this un-London, and while she can see the monsters, she can’t really help George. The whole book is about George as he tries to figure out what’s going on and why the statues are suddenly after him. That question isn’t really resolved, but there are two more books in the series. I won’t be reading them because I have better books to read. This one only gets a 5 out of 10 from me, only scoring this high because the story finally picked up a bit around page 350.
