“The Market” by J.M. Steele

This one is a Florida Teens Read book for this year, and it was also one of the Teen Book Club books for August. It follows high school senior Kate as she discovers The Market, a popularity ranking of the senior girls, open only to select investors. When she decides she wants to increase her value (and thus her popularity), her quest takes her places she never expected. Her friendships are tested, her first love(s) are thrown for a loop, and all her fantasies about being popular are coming true – sort of.

While I enjoyed the story, I found it highly unlikely. In one’s final 3 weeks of high school, you don’t care about popularity anymore – even if you do, it doesn’t matter because you’re going off to real life soon, so the high school drama doesn’t bother you anymore. At least, this was true in my experience – even the bullies stopped bullying, because graduation was so near, no one wanted to jeopardize the opportunity to get the heck out of high school forever! Also, the ending was highly unrealistic – it felt like something an adult would write for a teen book because that author wants to believe something like that could actually happen. This one gets a 6 from me, saved from a lower score because the characters were well developed and I was anxiously turning pages to see what Kate would do in the end.
