This is the fifth book in the House of Night series, and I was really worried going into it. The last book was very slow to me, and I was worried that the quality of storytelling might have disappeared for good. The book started out very slow, with an 80 page flashback, and I was really getting frustrated. Luckily, the story finally picked up speed, and I spent the rest of the book eagerly turning the pages.
Kalona has risen, and Zoey knows the only safe place for her and her friends is underground. The problems start when Heath, Zoey’s human ex-boyfriend, shows up and Zoey is fatally injured. The only course of action is to head back to the House of Night, where it is hoped that because Kalona wants Zoey alive, Neferet will heal her. But will Zoey and her friends fall under the spell of Kalona’s beauty? And how can Zoey defeat him? And once back at the House of Night, Zoey can’t forget about Stark, bringing the number of boys she really cares about back to three – how will she ever settle things between them?
This installment gets a 7.5 out of 10 from me – lower because of the slow start. I’ve come to expect better storytelling from the Cast women, and while this was better than the last one, it still had an entire quarter of the book as a slow flashback. The next one, Tempted, is due out October 27, 2009, just in time for Halloween.
