This was the Book Club book for September. This one is the first in a series of ten books about a boy named Bobby Pendragon and how he has been asked to help save everything in existence. (No stress there!)
In this first book of the series, eighth-grader Bobby is asked to accompany his uncle to help some people. Despite being late for the basketball championship game, Bobby agrees. Little does he know that the next few days will hold life or death decisions, unreal adventures, and a total change of his reality. Bobby is hurtled down a flume into another world - literally. He and his uncle are chased down a mountain by massive evil bears, and then his uncle is kidnapped and sentenced to death by the evil being who wants to take down the universe. Can Bobby save the people of this new world and his uncle and return to Earth? Or will evil prevail and destroy the universe?
The thing I liked best was how Bobby was true to himself - he was funny and trying to do his best, and he even admits when he's being less-than-courageous or when he cried a little. I really liked MacHale's style of storytelling, too, with most of the story being told through Bobby's journals he sends to his friend Mark, and then other parts of the story told Mark and his other friend Courtney. This first book is more for a middle schooler, but I'm sure Bobby grows up in the next nine books. I give this one a 8.5.
