I have mixed feelings about Atwater-Rhodes. Some of her stuff I like and some I don’t. I never know which to expect when I pick up one of her books, but happily this book I liked.
Sarah is a witch. She’s also a vampire hunter who befriends two vampires at her new school. When she finds out her prey, Nikolas, knows her friends, she is more determined than ever to kill him. But her new friends step in and complications ensue – if Sarah doesn’t kill Nikolas, he’ll keep killing humans. If Sarah does kill Nikolas, her friends will have to avenge him and she will either have to kill her friends or be killed by them. And as if that’s not enough to worry about, witch law clearly states that witches are not to be friends with vampires, and if Sarah’s mother finds out, she will take Sarah’s magic and leave her to die at the hands of her vampire enemies.
One of my favorite parts of Atwater-Rhodes’s books is how the endings aren’t entirely happy and how the main character has decisions to make about their own future. This one was an interesting new take on vampires and I give it a 7.
