“The Summoning” by Kelley Armstrong

Combining mentally ill teens with the possibility of supernatural powers, Armstrong has created a great story of intrigue, danger, horror, and betrayal. When 15-year-old Chloe suddenly sees a ghost at school whose face has been half-melted off, she freaks out. As in, running down the hall, screaming, fighting anyone who gets in her way as she tries to escape to freedom. The adults obviously think there’s something wrong with Chloe’s mind, so they send her to Lyle House, a place for other teens with problems like hers – not serious enough to be put in a hospital and straitjacket, but not normal enough to be in society. Chloe quickly learns that the sighting of the ghost at school is but the first, as she discovers she has supernatural powers that enable her to see ghosts. When it becomes clear that she must escape from Lyle House before the caretakers transfer her away to an asylum, she has to work with the other teens to get away from the danger. At the very end, a stunning betrayal leaves this one wide open for the sequel, The Awakening.

I was so into this story that I was really mad when I got to the end and discovered that there was a sequel! I was dying to know how Chloe would end up, what happened to her friends, what was really going on with her family, if she had romantic feelings for Simon…and how she was going to deal with her supernatural power. I’ve already put the next one on my list to check out ASAP, as this book gets an 8 from me.
