Want to ride a white tiger in India, as you set off to rescue a princess of the Hindu gods? What if your white tiger was incredibly sarcastic and also terrified of water – in the middle of monsoon season?
Tiger Moon is an epic story in the grand style of old India, with Hindu gods, exotic animals, the British occupation, a Rajah with a harem of 8 wives, and a thief on a quest to become a hero and rescue a princess. This lengthy book was entirely worth every page, and the ending was extremely satisfying in a non-empty-American-ending kind of way (Michaelis is German, like Cornelia Funke). There’s adventure, mystery, good people and bad people, and a deadline for our hero – he must rescue the princess before the next full moon or be cursed to be reborn as insects for eternity and never attain Nirvana.
This tale was quite complex and intricate and I would not recommend it to a reluctant reader. This is a story for someone who loves to delve deeply into new worlds (without becoming weighed down with dozens of pages of description) and who has the patience to stick with it for the first 35 pages as Michaelis sets up this wonderful, grand story. I give it a 9.5, my highest rating of a book so far, so if my review has made it sound interesting to you, pick up a copy next time you’re at the library.
