“The Gathering” by Kelley Armstrong

This is the same author who wrote the Darkest Powers trilogy, which I liked, so I decided to read this one.

Maya has a paw-shaped birthmark on her hip, but because she was abandoned at birth, she doesn’t know anything about her heritage. She loves being in the forest, which is good, because she lives in an isolated town. But when the wildlife starts acting strange, the local bad boy shows an interest in her, and some deaths are odd and unexplainable, there may be more than meets the eye.

I have mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand, knowing that this was a paranormal book, I got frustrated that Maya didn’t realize the paranormal connection until 2/3rds of the way through the book. On the other hand, it was pretty realistic – if you were to encounter the paranormal in your own life, it would take you a while to accept that. I felt like not much happened, and there were a lot of questions without any answers, but this is the first of a planned trilogy. If you like ordinary life colliding with the paranormal, or mysteries without obvious answers, this book is for you. A 6.5 from me.
